About Gen Auto AI
We are building the future of safety and security for autonomous systems. At Gen Auto, our work integrates large language models (LLMs), machine learning, and advanced user interfaces to power tools that ensure the verification and validation of AI-driven autonomous vehicles (AVs), robotics, and cyber-physical systems. Join us as we design human-centered solutions to guide emerging AI into a safer, explainable, and trustworthy future.

Role Overview
As a UI/UX Design Intern, you’ll work at the frontier of emerging technologies, contributing to the conceptualization, design, and testing of intuitive interfaces for our AI-powered safety and verification tools used in self-driving vehicles and robotics systems. You’ll create experiences that help engineers, regulators, and safety experts interpret complex data and trust automated decisions, ensuring user confidence in safety-critical environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with product leads and engineers to conceptualize interfaces that simplify scientific verification workflows for AV systems.
  • Design user experiences that align with cognitive safety protocols and support edge-case diagnostics.
  • Prototype visualizations for AI-driven safety assessments, including event-triggered alerts, system transparency, and explainable model outputs.
  • Conduct user research with AV safety engineers and simulate human-in-the-loop interaction scenarios.
  • Explore adaptive UI frameworks that dynamically scale based on threat levels, privacy sensitivity, or safety criticality.
  • Help create tools that visually represent verification standards (e.g., ISO 26262, UL 4600) in a developer-friendly way.

What You’ll Gain

  • Hands-on exposure to the intersection of AI, autonomous systems, and human-centered design.
  • Real-world impact designing interfaces for software-defined vehicles (SDVs), robotics, and connected systems.
  • Opportunity to contribute to a project recognized by the National Science Foundation and aligned with the 2023 Executive Order on Safe and Trustworthy AI.
  • Mentorship from experts in AI safety, UX research, and intelligent transportation systems.
  • Access to cutting-edge tools, digital twins, and AV testbeds in collaboration with university and industry labs.

Preferred Skills & Qualifications

  • Passion for emerging technologies, robotics, and designing for societal impact.
  • Experience with UI/UX tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, or similar platforms.
  • Understanding of human factors in high-risk systems (aerospace, automotive, health, etc.).
  • Familiarity with design systems for edge-case scenarios, visual hierarchy, and responsive frameworks.
  • Bonus: Exposure to AI explainability, LLM-based interaction models, or simulation-based UI testing, augmented and virtual reality AR/VR.

Nice-to-Have

  • Experience working with teams in autonomy, automotive HMI, or robotics UX.
  • Familiarity with safety standards (ISO 26262, STPA, or FMEA) and interest in visualizing them.
  • Knowledge of generative design, data visualization, or design for accessibility in safety-critical tools.
